Jack Reacher is a 2012 American action thriller film based on the novel One Shot by Lee Child. The film is written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie and stars Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, Werner Herzog, and Alexia Fast.

The plot follows Reacher (Cruise), a former military investigator who wanders the United States following his discharge while helping people he meets along the way. He comes to the aid of a girl (Pike) who has been accused of killing six people.

Reacher ultimately discovers that the true killer is an unknown sniper who has been preying on random victims throughout the city.

I really enjoyed this movie and so I’ve compiled a list of similar movies like Jack Reacher for people who might want to watch something in the same vein. It is very hard to find anything that captures the magic that this film does but nonetheless, here are some suggestions:

Law Abiding Citizen

Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is a family man, an upstanding citizen, a pillar of the community, and the mainstay of his late father’s law firm. He has just settled into a comfortable existence when one night he witnesses an unthinkable act – the brutal murder of his wife and daughter. This horrific tragedy destroys Clyde’s life as well as those closest to him.

Transformed by a desire for revenge, Shelton takes the law into his own hands and becomes a vigilante. The system that failed him decides to use this horror show as a means of cashing in – using Clyde’s face and birth certificate, they create their very own celebrity serial killer! With his family destroyed and everything he believed in shattered, Clyde wages a one-man war against the heart of the very system that created him. In this lawless land of wild west justice, who will stand up for what’s right?

The Brave One

Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) is an experienced and dedicated reporter for the New York Police Department. With a tragic past of her own, she now brings those stories to the public as well as bringing them justice. After surviving her own attack by a mugger who killed both her fiancee and unborn child, Erica vows to never be a victim again.

The story makes her the target of its next crime, an act no less than domestic terrorism. After killing her fiancee right in front of her, Erica is determined to find the man behind this attack. With nothing left to lose she begins a rampage for justice.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) has made his career exposing the crooked and corrupt practices of establishment Swedish figures. But while uncovering a story about billionaire industrialist Hans-Erik Wennerstrom, he stumbles upon an even bigger one.

He stumbles upon what could be described as the crime of the century – an elaborate, ghastly murder involving some of the country’s most powerful figures. Then one horrific night his life is turned upside down when Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), a young, sociopath computer hacker who works for him as an assistant, shows up at his doorstep blood-soaked and brandishing a gun. Blomkvist who has become enmeshed in a web of deceit and murder will be forced to choose between protecting his secret and his own life.

The Fugitive

Richard Kimble (Harrison Ford) is a respected surgeon and family man. His perfect life shatters when he’s falsely convicted for the brutal murder of his wife. After escaping from prison Richard goes on a hunt for the real killer.

As he gets closer to the truth, Kimble discovers that this hitman doesn’t just take lives – he also takes the innocence of those closest to him. This gripping crime-thriller is a heart-pounding journey of a man on a single-minded pursuit to uncover the truth, protect those he loves and bring a criminal to justice.

The Town

In Charlestown, Massachusetts, bank robbery is a way of life – an acceptable risk in exchange for fulfilling one’s dreams.

In this town, friends may become enemies and enemies may become friends as the residents orbit their lives around small-time heists. In this place, where rules are ignored and double-crossing is a way of life, these men have come to be known as the “Townies.”

But when the FBI introduces an undercover agent into their world who threatens to tear everything apart, they realize that sticking together takes on a whole new meaning. With the promise of a big cash score – the chance to wipe out their debts and build their dreams — they band together to take on one last job that seems straight out of a Hollywood movie.

The Mechanic

Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) is a ‘mechanic’ – an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets.

He’s the best at what he does, but his real value to his employers lies in never being caught. Now, someone wants Bishop dead. When he finds himself in the crosshairs, he realizes that his toughest job might be figuring out who wants him gone.

The Ghost Writer

The Ghost (Ewan McGregor) is a professional writer of espionage thrillers, hired to complete the memoirs of former British Prime Minister Adam Lang (Pierce Brosnan). When he begins work, he has no idea what secret Lang is hiding or where it will lead him.

As he delves deeper into Lang’s story, the Ghost is forced to confront the dark and dangerous truths of his own past.

The International

Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Whitman (Naomi Watts) has everything a career-driven woman could want—an apartment on Park Avenue, an Ivy League education, and a handsome blue-blood fiancé, Andrew (James Badge Dale).

But when she journeys to Milan to research a high-profile murder case involving an American woman, the life she has so carefully planned begins to crumble. There she crosses paths with Jack Valentine (Clive Owen), a world-weary and wounded former special ops agent who works as a fixer for the powerful.

Together they discover that beneath Milan’s glamorous façade lies a sinister underworld where nothing is as it seems…and no one can be trusted.

The Edge of Darkness

A veteran cop battles his own demons while pursuing an elusive serial killer whose crimes are timed to the lunar cycle in this gripping thriller.

Haunted by personal tragedy, Thomas Craven remains dedicated to his job but has developed a nasty temper that often gets him into trouble with suspects, fellow officers, and superiors. He frequently clashes with his superiors, but they allow Craven to continue his work because he’s so skilled at it.

Craven is also haunted by the unsolved murder of his daughter several years earlier. When a string of similar killings occurs, all taking place under a full moon, the police believe that the crimes are ritualistic in nature and committed by one person. Craven, however, has a hunch that the crimes are the work of different individuals who are being hired to imitate the murders committed by an unidentified mastermind.

Movies like Jack Reacher are usually about a protagonist who is able to solve the case by any means necessary. These movies show how they can be tough, while also being honorable and good at what they do. They have an edge of darkness that sets them apart from other action films because it has more depth than just explosions or car chases.  It leaves you with something to think about when the credits roll, which makes these types of movies even better!
