The Divergent Series

In The Divergent series, society is divided into five factions and one can only choose to be in one faction. The factions are Erudite, Dauntless, Candor, Amity, and Abnegation. The protagonist Tris Prior chooses to not take her tests so she doesn’t have to stay in the faction of Abnegation where she grew up. She goes to Dauntless instead, who is known for being brave. Her brother Caleb also switches over to Dauntless with her. They go through training together which includes jumping into a pit of smoke that has electric currents running through it.

When they emerge from the smoke they have gone through simulations that show how they would react in situations like fighting enemies or rescuing people from burning buildings. The simulations show how they would react to these things in real life and if they don’t do well then that is the faction they will be in. They learn more about their fears while also learning new skills. During one of Tris’ final tests, she has to fight another Dauntless person with daggers on wires so it makes it harder for her to win. She tricks them into lunging at her which ends up helping her beat them even though she gets hurt during the process.

While some people are celebrating, others are protesting against their leader Evelyn who says that there isn’t enough food for everyone within the city walls that they live in (Chicago). When people come together to protest Evelyn sends out large community-controlled robots to attack them. Tris and her friends end up fighting against the robots and they are successful in defeating them. However, Evelyn’s husband (Tobias) is killed during the fight. After Tobias’ death, Tris and Evelyn have a talk and Tris finds out that she was actually born into Erudite but her parents switched her over to Abnegation when she was younger because they knew that Erudite would be after her because of her Divergent abilities. Tris then decides to go back to Erudite with Caleb so she can try to fix the things that are wrong with the faction.

The second movie is called Insurgent and it starts off with Tris and Four (Tobias) being on the run from Jeanine Matthews who is the leader of Erudite. Jeanine wants to find Divergents and use their abilities for her own purposes. Tris and Four go to Candor where they hope that they can find allies to help them fight against Jeanine and Erudite. When they get there they meet with other factions and tell them what is going on. They all come together to agree to help Tris and Four overthrowers Jeanine and bring peace back to their city.

The third movie is called Allegiant and it starts off with Tris, Caleb, and Four leaving the city in order to find out what is outside of the city walls. When they get outside they find out that there is a whole world beyond their city and it is a much different place than what they are used to. There are different factions outside of their city and they all have their own agendas. Tris and her friends end up getting caught in the middle of the conflict between the factions and they have to choose which side they want to be on.
