Moneyball is a 2011 American biographical sports drama film directed by Bennett Miller and written by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. The film stars Brad Pitt as Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland Athletics baseball team, and Jonah Hill as Peter Brand, his assistant.

The story focuses on the 2002 season of the Athletics, in which Beane assembled a team of undervalued low-budget players to challenge the status quo of big-money teams like the New York Yankees.

The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2011, and was released in the United States on September 23, 2011. It was a box office success, grossing $110 million worldwide. In 2012, it was named one of the best films of the year by numerous critics and organizations.

The Wrestler is a dramatic film about retired professional wrestler Randy “The Ram” Robinson, played by Mickey Rourke, who attempts a comeback even though his body is no longer up to the physical demands of the sport.

The Wrestler is a very dark film but it has been praised for its acting and realistic portrayal of the wrestling industry.

The Fighter (2010)

The Fighter is a biographical sports drama film directed by David O. Russell and starring Mark Wahlberg as the real-life professional boxer “Irish” Micky Ward, who was managed by his family for most of his career.

The film also stars Christian Bale as Dicky Eklund, an older brother who helped train Micky to become a professional fighter, along with Amy Adams as Micky’s girlfriend and Melissa Leo as his mother.

The Fighter received excellent reviews for its acting ensemble and the way it humanized all of its characters instead of taking the usual sports film route towards heroism.

Warrior (2011)

An ex-Marine returns home to train in his father’s profession of choice, but an accident triggers a thirst for revenge that forces him to face off against the most prized fighter in Mixed Martial Arts.

Warrior is directed by Gavin O’Connor and it stars Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton, and Nick Nolte. It became one of the biggest surprise hits of the year after it debuted to critical acclaim and went on to become financially successful as well.
