In 2006, one of the most influential films was released. The Da Vinci Code is a thriller about a murder in the Louvre Museum and a battle between Opus Dei, the Catholic organization, and an ancient secret society – the Priory of Sion. A Harvard “symbologist” (code-breaker) named Robert Langdon is called upon to help with this investigation.

This film has received mixed reviews from critics; most agree that it is entertaining but not very plausible. The art department of the film was praised for its attention to detail, with many believing it to be authentic.

The plot revolves around several clues that Professor Langdon discovers at the Louvre museum in Paris during an event attended by Princess Sophie Neveu and her guardian, the French police captain Jean-François Champollion. The clues are anagrams and cryptograms that lead to a trail of secrets protected by the Church for two thousand years.

Langdon is helped by Neveu as he attempts to solve the clues and stop the bad guys from releasing a virus capable of mass destruction. The bad guys are members of the Holy Vehm, a secret society somehow related to Opus Dei, who believe that Sophie’s grandfather, Jacques Saunière (a former Grand Master of the Priory), has imparted the location of “The Holy Grail” to his granddaughter.

Da Vinci Code is based on the 2003 mystery novel of the same name by Dan Brown. A movie was released three years later in 2006, directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon. The Da Vinci Code book sold 80 million copies worldwide while the film grossed more than $750 million at box offices worldwide.
