I Am Number Four, released in 2011, was a science fiction thriller based on the book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes. It was directed by D. J. Caruso and starred Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Dianna Agron, Teresa Palmer, and Callan McAuliffe.
It follows John Smith as he is the only one of nine aliens who have escaped from a war on their planet Lorien against evil Mogadorians. He has been hiding on Earth for ten years with a guardian named Henri (Olyphant) to protect him from the Mogadorians until he is ready to fight them.
At school, he meets Sarah Hart (Agron), the girl next door who becomes his girlfriend. He also meets Sam Goode (McAuliffe) who knows about the existence of extraterrestrials and tells John that there are other people on Earth with special powers just like him. They are being hunted by the Mogadorians and must fight to protect their planet.
This movie was a box office disappointment earning only $81 million domestically compared to its estimated budget of $60 million. Despite the movie not doing well financially, it has a large following on social media platforms such as Tumblr and Twitter. There were even petitions for a sequel to be made. Unfortunately, there has been no news of a sequel being made as of now.
All fans can do now are hope and wait for any good signs. In the meantime, I have compiled some movies which have the same genre as I Am Number Four but I guarantee you will never ever watch or even know these movies before. Let’s jump to our list:
1). Lucy (I) (2014)
Directed by Luc Besson and starring Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Min-Sik Choi, and Amr Waked. The movie is about a woman who is forced to become a drug mule but the drugs seep into her system and she starts to use 100% of her brain. She then becomes a dangerous weapon for the mob. This movie was released to mainly negative reviews with critics criticizing the movie’s poor writing, incoherent plot, and over-reliance on graphic violence. Despite the bad reviews, it was still a box office success making $463 million worldwide.
I will not give away any more of the story but let me tell you; this is one of my favorite movies of all time. It is definitely a must-watch.
2). Chronicle (2012)
Directed by Josh Trank and starring Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan, Alex Russell, and Michael Kelly. The movie is about three high school friends who gain superpowers after finding a strange object in the woods. At first, they use their powers for fun but soon discover that with great power comes great responsibility. The movie was released to mixed reviews from critics but was a box office success making $127 million on a $12 million budget.
This is another great movie that I highly recommend. It is interesting to see how the characters handle their newfound powers and the consequences that come with them.
I love the story and I am hoping that a sequel will be made in the future.
3). The Darkest Minds (2018)
Directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson and starring Amandla Stenberg, Mandy Moore, and Gwendoline Christie. The movie is about a group of teenagers who have escaped from an internment camp that has been set up by the government. They are hiding in the forest when they encounter a strange new race called the red-eyed “brights”.
It is similar to I Am Number Four in that it is about teenagers who are using their powers to survive.
4). Simon’s Got a Gift (2019)
Directed by Greg Berlanti and starring Nick Robinson, Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., and Miles Heizer. The movie is about a teenage boy who discovers he has the power to take someone’s appearance that he touches.
5). The Gifted (2017)
Starring Chris Evan as a father of a daughter with mutant powers, the show follows a similar premise to I Am Number Four where a group of people must use their powers to survive.
These are just a few examples of movies that have a similar premise to I Am Number Four. If you are a fan of the movie, I suggest checking out some of these other movies. Who knows, you might enjoy them. In the meantime, while we wait for a sequel to be made or news of a movie, I will definitely watch these movies again.
Until next time sci-fi lovers!
